Cash rewards become viewed as an entitlement; part of their compensation. It is no longer motivating or thought of as an incentive – especially if the program rolls over quarter-to-quarter, year-to-year, etc.

Studies show that travel and merchandise awards are remembered longer than cash payments. They state that travel and merchandise incentives are preferred because it is not something they would typically get for themselves.
